The plot of the play Constellations revolves around a physics concept called the multiverse theory that playwright Nick Payne applied to a simple love story.
During rehearsals, Payne asked Imperial College’s Professor Mike Duff to visit the cast and crew and deliver a talk to help them conceptualise the multiverse theory by explaining its scientific basis.
The resulting play was a hit. It transferred to the West End and won the Evening Standard Best Play award for 2012. It continues to be successful and recently transferred to New York.
Professor Duff has remained close to the show – he was invited to the opening night and was a asked to write an article called ‘The Many World Interpretation’ for the programme when the play transferred to the Duke of York theatre in the West End.
Tom Bragg caught up with Professor Duff to find out more about his contribution and about the theory that has captured the imagination of so many theatre-goers.
