I, Science

The science magazine of Imperial College

On this week's show: Gunpowder plot of 1605; Chernobyl disaster and nuclear power; Unusual heatwave in North East Asia; and an earthquake predicted to destroy North West America.

This week at I, Science Radio, we explore human and natural disasters as part of the forthcoming edition of the I, Science magazine, ‘Earth’.

We began by looking at some near-misses Earth’s had, such as the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, which we celebrate tonight – the 5th November! Looking from the past and into the future, we discuss the implications of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, the summer 2018 heatwave in North East Asia, and an earthquake that could disrupt an entire continent. Finally, we were fortunate to have a very special interview with Professor Bruce Malamud of King’s College London – who discussed his highly influential research into how human interactions can cause natural disasters and what it means for us.

Listen below and find the rest of our shows here.

Catch us next Monday at ICRadio.com from 5-6pm!

The I, Science Radio is presented by Hilary Guite and produced by Jason Hosken

This week’s show presenters are Katy Pallister, Aaron Hadley, Tristan Varela, Dani Ellenby, and Rachel Ng
