This yellow garden spider (Argiope aurantia) wraps its prey in silk. Once the prey is secure, the spider kills it by injecting its venom. Although these spiders look scary, they are harmless to humans.

I took this photo last summer in Missouri and got to watch the amazing sight of this predator at work.
