Recently, when Steve Cross was working with opera sopranos, he discovered that they think about and describe their mouths, lungs and sound-making abilities in ways that are totally different to how he thinks about his. He asked Prof Sophie Scott about this and she explained how her work with beatboxers and impressionists has shown the same thing.
Some of the professionals Steve and Sophie work with are self-taught, some conservatoire-trained, but they all have to come to a different understanding of how their mouth makes noises, and how they can keep their system in great shape for performance.
Now for MOUTHY, Steve and Sophie are delving into this even further through a participatory event. Mouth Noises will look at the incredible range of sound the human body can create, through the experiences and understanding of professionals who make those noises for a living.
